Cricket v St Mary’s Melrose (and Merchiston)

There were lots of matches for the boys today with the U12s playing St Mary’s Melrose (at Merchiston), the Colts A and Colts B playing St Mary’s Melrose (away) and the U9s playing St Mary’s Melrose and Merchiston (at Merchiston):

U12s -Luckily the rain on Monday and Tuesday did not thwart the game which was superbly and kindly hosted by Merchiston. Once we heard that the pitch had dried out we hopped on the minibus and headed to windy Edinburgh to play St Mary’s. As the CE exams are this week we agreed an U12 fixture and what a promising team for next season! Finn S captained the side and having lost the toss we fielded which is exactly what we wanted to do. The innings started brilliantly as Finn trapped their opener plumb LBW second ball, 0-1. St Mary’s rallied a bit but with some excellent accurate bowling from all our bowlers we skittled St Mary’s within an hour for 45. Cosmo GC, Seb S, Elliott M, Jacob MP and Harris P all chipped in with wickets and we are fast running out of superlatives to describe Will F’s fielding as he once again took some amazing catches and stopped certain fours from his position at short mid on. We were too early for tea and so Cosmo GC and Robbie G entered the arena to open our innings. They batted beautifully and we cantered to victory with 58 balls to spare for the loss of only one wicket. An absolute hammering! The boys performed sensationally as a team and were a real credit to their school both on and off the field of play. (Mr David Knock)

Colts A – Uneven bounces from the wicket at St Mary’s and some lively bowling led to a some unfortunate wickets, but Jack H and Ellis A stuck around making decent scores of 24 and 13 respectively. We finished with 82 for 8 after 20 overs and knew we would have to field well to be competitive. The bowling got off to a good start with Jack and Jamie giving away few runs and getting a wicket each. St Mary’s got their run rate going after this and were heading towards our target. Fortunately our catching was good and Gabin L claimed four wickets. Gabin (our French Jonty Rhodes) also hit the stumps to claim a crucial run out. Kerr took their final wicket with his first ball and the match was won by 11 runs after 16 overs. It was a good game of cricket, made especially enjoyable thanks to the energy and ambition shown by so many of the fielders. (Mr John Gore)

Colts B – The sun shone bright on the Ardvreck Colts B team as they took on their opposite numbers from St Mary’s. Team captain, Richard T won the toss and opted to field. Some solid batting from St Mary’s gave them a good total in spite of two wickets bowled by Paul and Richard. Some excellent fielding from Mattieu, Archie, Matteo and others also helped to claim more run outs from the home team including a run out from Ellis J’s first bowl. Ardvreck then took over, chasing a total of 288 (St Mary’s started on 200) from 20 overs. Paul hit some great shots, including a couple of 4’s. Xan also hit a boundary as did Mattieu with his first ball. Archie and Freddy had a strong partnership with a combined total of 21 but even with a brave charge from Rory and Matteo, Ardvreck were unable to close the gap and finished on a respectable 266. Thanks to Miss Whitelaw and the staff and children at St Mary’s for hosting us. (Mr Andy Robertson)

U9s – On Wednesday the Under 9’s travelled to Merchiston to play a triangular tournament. Our first match against Merchiston ended in an Ardvreck victory with Merchiston scoring 134 runs and Ardvreck scoring 160 runs. In our second match St.Marys scored 149 runs. Sadly we only scored 98 runs so we lost our second match Our bowling had improved significantly. However, some of our team are still a little risk averse and opportunities to notch up more runs were missed. We were not hitting the ball for six when batting. The team has improved significantly and I am pleased with them. There is still work to be done on our batting and fielding. (Mr Richard Gibson)
