Merchiston Pre-Season Training

The U13’s and Colts travelled to Edinburgh to take part in a pre-season training session hosted by Merchiston:

U13 – What a first day back…!  A selection of senior boys were whisked off to Edinburgh only a couple of hours after returning from their long summer break, some having barely touched a rugby ball for the past 8 months!  Merchiston proved to be cordial hosts for their ‘Festival of Rugby’, a mini tournament comprising two short group matches and an overall first, third and fifth place play off.  After a brief warm-up, Ardvreck were straight out of the blocks in a closely battled contest with Fettes, both teams dusting off cobwebs as they went.  After a very evenly contested game, Ardvreck came out on top thanks to a brilliant forward move from Hamish T which set up Jago M for the only try of the match.  Our next match against Merchiston proved to be a different kettle of fish and in spite of a steely performance and some big tackles from Harris P, Elliott M and James H amongst others, the hosts proved to be too well drilled and took the win.  We then played our third place play-off against a tough looking Loretto side who put two past us in quick succession.  We battened down the hatches and, thanks to some quick thinking in the backs, exploited a small channel in the centre of the field with Cosmo GC scoring to put us back in the game.  The rest of the match was a very even affair with both sides threatening to score until Loretto played a wide move and released a fast runner for the winning try.  Well done Ardvreck.  I couldn’t have asked for more from the boys who really threw themselves into the games.  Imagine how good we could be after some practice… (Mr Andy Robertson)

Colts – The Colts had a swift start to their season as they hot footed it to Merchiston for the pre-season rugby festival on the first day of our term. It was a great start to the term and blew some of the summer cobwebs away as we grew into the day and improved throughout, gaining plaudits from all the referees. The Won 1, Drew 1, Lost 1 statistic for the day was very pleasing and we look forward to working hard over the season to come! (Mr David Knock)
