In spite of some very heavy rain and several absences due to injury, St Mary’s were keen for a good game of rugby and warmly welcomed us to their back pitches in Melrose. Due to St Mary’s reduced numbers, it was agreed to combine the first and second teams and field a mixed side for some XV a side play. We also opted to play 3 periods so that we would have the opportunity to get everyone onto the field.
Ardvreck started strong with some pinpoint passes and good line speed leading to tries from Will F and Finn S. Elliott M was unlucky not to add a third after being tackled into touch just before he grounded the ball in the corner. St Mary’s did threaten to break our line but some outstanding tackling from Seb S, Will F, Charlie L amongst others meant that they were unable to transfer their efforts into points.
A few changes were made for the second period and Ardvreck came straight out of the blocks with another score from Will F. At this point the hone side battened down the hatches and played some exciting rugby, trying to find a hole in the Ardvreck defence. They finally scored just before the end of the second period to bring the score to 3 – 1.
I made a raft of changes for the final third, particularly in the backs, taking off some of the key players and allowing everyone to get some game time. Unfortunately, although there were some exciting breaks, none of these converted into further points and St Mary’s exploited a few gaps in the defence to score 3 tries.
On paper, this meant that the home team won the tie 4-3 but Mr Rawson and I agreed to call this a fair tie as Theo reflected the run of play. I was enormously happy with how the boys conducted themselves on the field and was pleased to see how all of them stepped up to 1st team rugby. Well done lads! (Mr Robertson)
