Cricket- Colts v Belhaven 21/04/18

Colts A

On Saturday, the Colts A team travelled to Belhaven first their first match of the cricket season. We couldn’t ask for better conditions with beautiful sunshine and a slight breeze coming from the North Sea. The home team chose to bat first and the boys spread around the field in an attempt to demonstrate some slick fielding skills. There were a few wild balls but in general, the boys bowled well and there were some particularly accurate balls and one wicket from Robert F in his first game of real, ‘hard-ball’ cricket. I was also pleased to see some excellent acrobatics from Jamie S and Harrison M. By the end of the 25 overs, Belhaven were on 151-6. After match tea, we resumed with Ardvreck in to bat. Captain Ellis A was first to go on only his second ball with a fine ball from the hosts. The wickets started to tumble after this with Archie C scoring a creditable 12 runs but Belhaven’s bowling was just too accurate. We somehow managed to lose 4 wickets in one over! Ardvreck finished on 46 runs – back to the nets for us! Many thanks to Belhaven for being wonderful hosts and the lads for putting a great deal of effort into the match. (Mr Robertson)

Colts B

The Colts B team travelled to Belhaven to enjoy their first cricket match of the season. Sadly, we were depleted due to illnesses and absences so fielded a team of 7 strong Ardvreckians. We were able to borrow two excellent Belhaven pupils and went to a 9-a-side It was agreed that the match would be used as a training session and a look at some etiquette. Ardvreck won the toss and elected to field first. Bowlers put down some excellent balls which were well defended and an excellent opening pair made 82 before a super ball from Cameron A bowled one out. Batsmen learnt to stand far enough away from their stumps and still inside the crease and bowlers started to practise getting their foot down in the right place on the crease. Another two wickets came before the end and Belhaven had set a hefty target of 121/3 from 20 overs.

Ardvreck went into bat and were well applauded by Belhaven as they walked on. Matteo opened and defended beautifully for over an hour, a fine test match performance. There were a number of 4’s from Fred Jones and Cameron A and Fred and the partnership of Matteo and Fred scored the majority of Ardvreck’s runs. Special mention must go to Dante for bowling his first over ever, indeed 3 fine overs with no wides. Ardvreck managed to avoid being all out and ended the 20 overs on 39/6. A fine performance from a very young team in their first ever match.

Fred and William were joint men of the match for superb batting and bowling respectively. (Mr Banks)
