Ardvreck is the only prep school north of the border to offer .22 rifle shooting. All pupils are given the chance to try this exciting activity, usually in the fourth form. We are fortunate to have an excellent purpose-built indoor 20 yard range with two firing points and the 1st VIII squad also shoots outdoors at 50 yards at nearby Drummond Castle in the Summer Term. Pupils learn to handle firearms with great care and respect and the focus and concentration that they acquire can prove very beneficial elsewhere in their education.

Most pupils show sufficient aptitude to represent the school in various competitions shot on a postal basis and occasionally in ‘shoulder to shoulder’ matches. Members of the 1st VIII squad compete successfully at various age levels including adult competitions.

Shooting takes place almost every day of the week at various times which, as far as possible, avoid clashes with the many other activities in which pupils are involved.

OA Jonathan Hammond (88-94) is a shining example of what can be achieved by those who have shot at Ardvreck. In 1998, at the age of just 17, he won both the Scottish and British Individual Short-Range Senior Championships and, competing in Barcelona, he became the World Junior (U21) Champion. He represented Great Britain in the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing and once again at London 2012. He won four medals – two gold, a silver and a bronze – in Delhi in October 2010 to become Scotland’s most decorated athlete at a single Commonwealth Games. He is currently Head Rifle Coach at West Virginia University, USA, and President of the Preparatory Schools Rifle Association.
