Rugby: 1st XV v Belhaven

The sun was low in the sky and shining bright at the Ardvreck pitches. Conditions were perfect for some crisp and precise rugby against the visiting Belhaven team. Both sides lined up and awaited Mr Pounder’s whistle to commence battle. A fierce, but evenly contested opening 10 minutes ensued with both sides defending well and neither team able to break the deadlock. Eventually, Seb S saw a gap and hammered through the Belhaven defence, getting the ball to Robbie G who was able to carry his momentum over the line for the opening try. Will F slotted home the conversion.

Belhaven came back hard and were hungry to level the score which, after several phases of play, they duly did – back to nil nil.

The next part of the game saw end to end rugby with both sides trying to force a way through some well organised defences. Again it was Ardvreck who eventually found a way through with Charlie L making a ducking and diving run from 15 metres out.

All credit is due to Belhaven who didn’t let their heads go down and came back fighting. Their ferocity at the ruck paid off, with their fullback in particular managing to win the ball against the head in several occasions. Before we knew it, the scores were level again at 14-14.

From here the game was very even, but it was Belhaven who were more able to make the most of their chances, scoring two more tries before the end of the game. On the Ardvreck side, Donald G was also unfortunate to snatch one back with the ball being judged to have been held up over the line after a hard hitting run.

The boys deserve to hold their heads high after a fantastic game of rugby. Many of them will be sore tomorrow after putting their bodies on the line for the full game. Thanks to Micah VB and Jago M who were able to come on as replacements after completing their game for the 2’s.
