Netball- Netball Tournament

On Wednesday 14th March Ardvreck hosted their annual Netball tournament. Due to the ‘Beast from the East’ it had been postponed earlier in the term but luckily that disappeared and we had a lovely afternoon for it. There were two competitions, an U13 and an U11 tournament. The U13 tournament consisted of 8 different schools and the U11 tournament consisted of 7 different schools. Both age groups were split into two groups to play a round Robin. Once the round robin had been completed the top 4 teams over the two groups from both age groups went through to play another match, 3/4th play offs and then 1st and 2nd place final. All matches were 10 minutes one way until we got to the final and that was 10 minutes each way. After the finals had been completed everyone was invited for match tea and presentation in the Crabbie.

The U13 team for Ardvreck had a good pool, Ardvreck, Craigclowan, Loretto and Strathallan. Our first match was against Loretto. The girls’ all played very well and it was a tight game with the final score finishing 1 all. Next up we had Craigclowan. We knew this was going to be a much harder game, and it was. The Ardvreck girls’ were trying to play to the speed of the Craigclowan girls and this was not working for them. They needed to slow down and spread themselves out to allow the ball to be moved around the court much more freely. Unfortunately we lost that game. Our final round robin game was against Strathallan. We played Strathallan earlier in the term and it was a close game, likewise this time. The girls played much more of their own game this time and this really did work. They were managing to both man to man mark as well as zone marking which was really good to see and have some differentiation. Although the girls put up a good fight, we unfortunately lost. However all was not lost as we made it into the top 4 of the U13 competition. We got to play one final game in the 3rd/4th place play off which was against Belhaven. Again a very tough game and we could not pull together a win. Well done to all the girls who played in the team and a special mention to Abi C for her brilliant captaincy skills.

The U11 team was made up of some of our form 3 & 4s but due to illness, or other commitments we had to bring some of our form 2s into the match.

Our first match was against Loretto. This was the first match the girls had played as a team, which meant in the first half the girls had to work hard to learn each others type of game. Our defence team was good with our captain Tally M leading the way as Goal Keeper. Kiki P and Ameila P worked well together getting into space and gaining some ground up the court but unfortunately the ball was intercepted and Loretto managed to score. Half time came and the girls were feeling down, so with some inspirational words form Tally and me the girls went on feeling upbeat. There play was considerably better but unfortunately it wasn’t enough. Loretto was a strong team. Player of the match went to Tally M our Captain for being Goal Keeper for the first time, getting stuck in and defending well.

Our second and last match of the tournament was against Craigclowan. We knew going into the match it was going to be tough as they had just beaten Loretto. The girls tried hard. They all gave 100% trying to get the ball to our shooters, but Craigclowan were very good at getting the ball back into their third. Even with our defence stronger we couldn’t quite hold them off. The player of the match was Kiki P for her brilliant movement around the court and stepping in a Centre for the U11 team. (Miss MacLeod)
