With drops of rain hanging threateningly in the air, the Ardvreck Colts A team took to the field at Craigclowan for an exciting game of cricket. The home team won the toss and opted to send Ardvreck in to bat first. Some electric bowling from the hosts led to early departures for our openers Robert F and Ellis A with only 7 runs scored between them. The rest of the team did their best to add to the tally with Archie C staying in at the crease for nearly an hour but Craigclowan made life hard for the batsmen with accurate bowling and disciplined fielding limiting the Ardvreck total to only 58 for 9 by the end of the 20 overs. We briefly paused for tea before letting our hosts take to the crease, chasing our total. Their openers did their best to catch this on their own and it was only through the determined bowling of Robert F and Ellis A that kept them down to a total of 28. Ellis A was particularly on form, taking 5 wickets in total. Note should be made of some more pin-point bowling from Ewan FL and Kerr B, and great catching from Jamie S and Ewan FL respectively to claim another two wickets. All this was not quite enough to defeat the hosts who matched and surpassed our total in the 16th over. Well done Craigclowan and thanks for being such good hosts and great sports. The match ball was awarded to Ellis A for outstanding bowling – the action area for the next game is to score more runs off the bat! (Mr Robertson)
On a cold and rather damp Wednesday the Colts B team travelled to Craigclowan to take them on in a game of Quick cricket.
Our team lost the toss and they put us into bat first. Quick cricket is slightly different, each pair of batsman stay in for two overs and any wickets result in a loss of 5 runs each. The aim is to run as much as possible.
With a number of wides and no balls a few of our pairs failed to score any runs individually, but our total still increased steadily. A good pairing of William and Fred produced a few runs and at the end of our innings we had given away only 3 wickets. This gave us a total of 137.
With the weather holding (somehow!) Craigclowan immediately went into bat to try and get some overs in before match tea. Laurie and William took some excellent wickets and after a heavy over including 5 6’s the Craigclowan Batsman was Caught and Bowled by Colt’s B team Captain, William – a first C&B in the Ardvreck Cricket season.
Other wickets went when Fred took a fantastic catch off of a cleverly set up ball from bowler William. Although we gave away far fewer wides and no balls, this meant that their scoring rate was much higher and despite a final surge in wickets for William and Fred, the hosts ended on 184 after one of their overs included 5 huge 6’s.
Besides the weather, there were a large number of positives to take away from this match for Ardvreck. Our bowling and fielding has improved much over the last week. We will spend some time in the nets, over the next few days, focussing on our batting and running between the wickets.
Match tea was an excellent affair. A beautiful selection of sandwiches and cakes coupled with fine company. Many thanks to Craigclowan for hosting us. (Mr Banks)
