On a cloudy, yet dry day, the Colts B team went down to play Belhaven B’s in a game of Quick Cricket. Having opened our season against Belhaven, we were looking forward to the opportunity of a rematch with our first opponents of the season and relished the opportunity to put our training into practise. Ardvreck won the toss and elected to field first.
Captain William’s characteristically perfect bowling was hit for several 4’s before he managed to take 2 wickets in very quick succession. One a catch by Sam and another demonstrated an rare method to dismiss a batsman, pushing the batsman onto his stumps where he hit his wicket.
Some further fine bowling from Sam and Fred saw the loss of a few wickets and some excellent fielding allowed us to take another couple. A big positive for our innings in the field was the very small number of wides and overthrows. With Belhaven scoring a number of spectacular 4’s and 6’s the hosts finished on 128
After a very fine match tea we went in to chase their well-built total. This would be a very tall order to run down, but never one to avoid a challenge Ardvreck went into bat with gusto. Learning from previous matches, our aim for the batting was to run as much as possible. Taking as many singles as we could. The boys did this brilliantly, although occasionally a little more decisive running would have avoided the loss of wickets. Indecision in the middle of the wicket is fatal for batsmen and the boys fell into this trap a couple of times. Matteo continued his fantastic test cricket style batting with safe, secure batting, Cameron A battled very well, and took a couple of 4’s off a superb pace bowler (Sandy) who would not have looked out of place on any A team and Lawrie was the highest scoring batsman with 12 off just 5 balls!
With a few too many Ardvreck wickets, Belhaven held onto their lead. We will return to training, uplifted by our running and will look carefully at our calling and decisiveness. (Mr Knock)
